L.I.V.E. - Healing Hospitality in Scripture and Rule of Benedict
With Sr. Mary Forman, OSB
February 10, 2023
Often people, who have experienced tragedy or acute suffering, blame themselves or argue that they must have done something wrong that the tragedy happened to them. This session will explore the common reasons given for suffering that try to explain why God wants us to suffer and why these reasons fail to ease the sufferer. Sr. Mary will explore the two major strands of attitudes toward suffering and healing in the Jewish Scriptures; Jesus’ attitudes toward illness and his healing ministry; Benedict’s teaching on hospitality and “the medicine of divine scripture” (RB 28.3). Three healing stories in the New Testament will be broken up to show Jesus’ healing hospitality to individuals, who were suffering and were touched by Jesus’ compassion. Finally, participants will hear some modern approaches to healing and faith.
St. Gertrude’s L.I.V.E. (Living In a Virtual Environment) offers online programs to further opportunities for prayer, learning, community, and spiritual growth from a Benedictine perspective. We look forward to bringing St. Gertrude’s to you, wherever you are.
