L.I.V.E. - The Role of Monasticism in Church History
With Dr. Samantha L. Miller
March 24, 2023
Christians began separating themselves from society in the late third and early fourth centuries in order to demonstrate their commitment to Christ and a way of life that is different from the prevailing culture. This is especially true after Christianity gains power. Soon thereafter some of these Christians formed monasteries and lived this separate life communally. We will explore the place that monasteries have had in church history as anchors of faith in the midst of an often turbulent world: town centers, places of prayer for the world, places of education, places that quietly witness to God and preserve faith regardless of what happens around them. We will also explore how this role of monasteries continues today in our own turbulent world.
St. Gertrude’s L.I.V.E. (Living In a Virtual Environment) offers online programs to further opportunities for prayer, learning, community, and spiritual growth from a Benedictine perspective. We look forward to bringing St. Gertrude’s to you, wherever you are.
