Sr. Betty Schumacher

Sister Betty grew up in rural Idaho and entered the Monastery of St. Gertrude following graduation from high school.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Idaho.  She completed graduate programs in counseling and pastoral ministry at Seattle University.

She was a teacher and a principal in the Catholic school system in Idaho before going into parish ministry.  She has worked in parishes in Idaho and Washington.

Sr. Betty had facilitated a variety of retreats for RCIA groups, women’s spirituality groups, the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in Bellevue, WA, as well as facilitated a number of workshops.

She is the present director of Spirit Center at the Monastery of St. Gertrude.

"Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness."  Desmond Tutu How do we live with hope in a world that is wounded, broken, chaotic and polarized?  Our culture and society continue to tell stories to justify the sufferings and injustice that many are experiencing today. We have an opportunity to re-tell the stories from another perspective that offers hope to our world.
